I was an interior designer in California for twenty years. When thinking about a move towards a less hectic life I thought about the clients I was able to serve in my years as a designer.
My range of projects included large remodels of homes, kitchens, and bathrooms plus a wide range of consultation projects. I loved all of the large projects but the consultations were very rewarding because in a relatively short amount of time we changed a house to a home.
Consistently in the interview process, I heard clients express confusion about how to create a room that felt warm and inviting. Many told me they seldom entertained because the space did not reflect who they were nor their style or personality. And so we started with the basics of space planning, lighting, paint, and accessories. Often purchasing a new sofa or chair was not in the budget so we worked with items that were smaller and able to be relocated to different areas of the room to creating a new look.
After the room was re-designed, we went to the next phase which usually included paint, larger accessories such as pillows and lighting. Towards the end of the project, we relocated smaller accessories such as wall artwork, coffee table books, and miscellaneous accessories to the appropriate areas of the room.
My clients were so pleased with the outcome and the comment I heard most often was they finally felt the space reflected who they were and that now they enjoyed entertaining. I was thrilled.
The focus of this blog will take various design concepts, elements, materials and cover them in each blog. Perhaps, paint will be a topic…how bright…color range…finish…how many colors…and etc. I invite you to e-mail me with your comments which will add more ideas to blog about.
